Thyroid Cancer Treatment

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate various bodily functions, including metabolism. Thyroid cancer is relatively uncommon compared to other types of cancer but is generally treatable if detected early.

Symptoms

  • Mass close to the midline of the Neck
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Masses on the sides of the Neck

Types Of Thyroid Cancer

  • Papillary thyroid cancer: This is the most common type, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically grows slowly and has a good prognosis.

  • Follicular thyroid cancer: This type makes up about 10-15% of cases. It tends to spread to other organs more frequently than papillary thyroid cancer.

  • Medullary thyroid cancer: This type arises from thyroid cells that produce a hormone called calcitonin. It can run in families and requires different treatment than papillary or follicular thyroid cancer.

  • Anaplastic thyroid cancer: This is the rarest and most aggressive type, accounting for less than 2% of cases. It grows rapidly and is challenging to treat.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

  • Diagnosis typically involves a combination of physical examination, imaging tests (like ultrasound), and biopsy (sampling of tissue for examination under a microscope).
  • Treatment options depend on the type and stage of the cancer but may include surgery (thyroidectomy), radioactive iodine therapy, hormone replacement therapy, and sometimes external beam radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
  • The prognosis for thyroid cancer is generally good, especially for papillary and follicular types when detected early. The outlook can vary depending on factors such as the cancer’s type, stage, and the individual’s overall health.
